Spinner Dolphins in Hawaii

As you sail out to your snorkel or manta ray tour you may see some spinner dolphins.  These dolphins are commonly seen off the coast of Kona and they get their name by leaping and spinning out of the water.  According to NOAA Fisheries the technical name for them is ‘longirostris’ and is Latin for “long beak” due to their slender shaped beak.

These animals are expert at leaping out of the water and spinning as much as seven time before re-entering.  Experts believe this leaping behavior may be a form of communication – or they are ridding themselves of parasites.  Whatever the reason, it’s quite a joyful experience to watch these sea mammals jump and spin.
