BIG ISLAND EVENTS IN MARCH 2022

Victoria Derrick for Hawaii Guide on Big Island Events in March.  Our manta ray tours are the best in Kona and an event to put on your bucket list!

Despite the hope that continues to swell on the horizon, even in 2022 thus far, events remain “up in the air” due to COVID-19. The Hawaiian Islands have been particularly cautious throughout this undeniably nightmarish process, and the Big Island more than perhaps any island has been, and continues to be, extremely careful with its event planning.

That being said, there are some pretty cool things lined up for the Big Island in March 2022. As previously, we recommend keeping a close eye on these as March approaches – some may get canceled or postponed, but some also may get announced!

Here is an introductory guide to the main events/festivals coming to the Big Island in March 2022.

Kona Brewers Festival

This, currently, is the big event of the month.

The Kona Brewers Festival is a massive community celebration held every March, hosted by the Ke Kai Ala Foundation. 2022 marks the festival’s 27th anniversary. Beer. Food. Live music. Live dancing/performances. Fashion shows. All by the beach. Tickets are expensive and in limited quantity as part of safety measures, so don’t wait to book this if you want to attend.

Those in attendance are required to be vaccinated (boosters not required). The vaccination and ID check station opens at 2PM. There will be a ceremonial blessing at Ahuena Heiau at 3:45, and then gates open and the pandemonium begins at 4.

Where: 74-5617 Pawai Pl, Kailua-Kona
When: Saturday March 12th, 4PM – 7PM

5th Annual North Kohala Golf Tournament

If you’re among the many golfers visiting Hawaii in the hopes of playing one of the state’s legendary golf courses, March is an excellent month for you to be on the Big Island.

For the fifth year, the gorgeous and award-winning Hapuna Golf Course on the Kohala Coast will be the site of a tournament to support the North Kohala Community Resource Center.

The format is 4-person scramble and registration opens at 8AM, one hour before the tournament kicks off.

Where: Hapuna Golf Course at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
When: Saturday March 5th, 9AM – 2PM

Waikoloa Ukulele Festival

It is important to mention that this event is yet to be formally announced – however, normally it is held every March at the Waikoloa Beach Resort. In 2021, it was sadly canceled; but we recommend keeping an eye on it this time around.

The Waikoloa Ukulele Festival is a fantastic cultural celebration of Hawaiian music, focused on what the event plausibly calls Hawaii’s “favorite instrument.” The festival was first started in 2001 and is of international significance for the global ukulele community; both listeners and players are drawn from around the world.

Where: Waikoloa Beach Resort
When: March TBA

Although limited compared to times past, the Island of Hawaii still has unique offerings for those looking to experience food, drink, and culture this March.

Mahalo and best wishes for your visit!
