The Hoku Nui sets sail from Keauhou Bay at 2:00 pm. As we sail down the Kona Coast, keep an eye out for Humpback Whales, from Dec-April, and Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins, year-round.
Approximately 45-minutes later, we’ll enter Historic Kealakekua Bay, where you’ll spot the World Famous Captain Cook Monument. “Hawaii the Big Island Revealed” guidebook says, “snorkeling in Kealakekua Bay near the monument is perhaps the best you will find anywhere in the state.” Bring an underwater camera to capture the colorful schools of fish and sea life swimming through the vibrant reef and ancient lava flows.
Enjoy the view and sip on a beer or tropical cocktail for additional purchase over light snacks, or “pupus” as the locals call them. These include Maui Style chips and fresh, tropical fruits and beverages. Then it’s back to Keauhou Bay, arriving by approximately 5 pm. While your Hawaii snorkel adventure has come to an end, your memories will last a lifetime.
Use provided floatation devices to avoid contact with the reef — it keeps you safe and the coral healthy.
Allow wildlife to approach you. Respect the space of fish, turtles, and coral structures. Patience reveals the best moments.
Help our crew reduce waste by refilling your water bottles onboard. You can learn more about our commitment to sustainable practices in our Responsible Tourism Tips.
Listen to crew stories about mo‘olelo (traditions) and the importance of malama i ke kai — caring for the sea that gives life to the islands. Discover more about local reefs and protected waters in our Marine Sanctuary Guide.
We perfectly size our groups to ensure individual attention and a peaceful atmosphere. Our team focuses on education, comfort, and genuine connection — so every guest feels like ohana.

The Afternoon Snorkel Tour is designed for guests who prefer a more relaxed start to their day and enjoy the warm, golden light of late afternoon. While both tours visit vibrant reef areas, the afternoon experience emphasizes a slower pace, soft lighting ideal for photography, and a more laid-back atmosphere after a morning of exploring the island.
Afternoon conditions along the Kona Coast often feature gentle trade winds and a warm, glowing ocean surface. While mornings may be slightly calmer, afternoons still provide excellent visibility and comfortable snorkeling. Our captains continuously monitor conditions to ensure safety and choose the best reef locations for the day.
Yes. Many photographers love the Afternoon Snorkel Tour because the sun angle creates rich, golden tones on the water and reef. This “golden hour” light can enhance underwater colors and topside photos of the coastline, Hoku Nui, and your time on deck.
The Afternoon Snorkel Tour includes light refreshments such as fresh tropical fruit and snacks, along with cold non-alcoholic beverages. Cold alcoholic signature drinks are available for adults after snorkeling, once guests are finished with in-water activities and safely back onboard.
The Afternoon Snorkel Tour is ideal for guests who prefer a peaceful, unhurried outing — including families, couples, and travelers who have already spent the morning exploring on land. Confident swimmers who enjoy a relaxed pace, as well as Ride-Along Guests who want to savor the scenery and stories from the comfort of the deck, often find this tour to be a perfect fit.
